**Update**
We have learned a little more about William S. Hooper!
"Hooper" was born on October 26, 1846 in Alabama to Elias and Rosetta (Stevens) Hooper. He lived at various residences in New Haven, finally settling in East Haven at 113 Main Street, where he eventually passed away as a result of pneumonia. He was a Private on the Union side during the Civil War. He was in the 15th Infantry. He mustered in on 8/24/1864. Hooper was imprisoned as a POW on 3/8/1865 in Kinston, NC. He was paroled on 3/26/1865 and he mustered out on 6/27/1865. He was married to Sophia Alice Hooper, who was from CT. Hooper died in his home on January 31, 1919 and was buried in East Lawn Cemetery.
We meet many people in our lives, and sometimes meet persons with a true heart and incredible kindness. When we started mapping the East Lawn and Greenlawn Cemeteries for American Flags and Wreaths Across America, we always made a special stop to visit Civil War Veteran Hooper. His stone had suffered damage and lay on the ground rather than upright. Today we are witness to the heart, the kindness of Cemetery Superintendent Billy and his crew who have restored the stone to its upright position. Veterans are honored to be recognized, remembered and honored. Grateful thanks to the support and service granted Veterans by the East Lawn and Greenlawn Cemetery Board & staff.
Be sure to check back often for updated information on our Adopted Veterans as we learn more and more about them!
